O
Iowa has never specified what kind of oak is its official state tree, but the stateâs most common oaks are the white oak and the bur oak. Oaks are deciduous trees, which means that they shed their leaves in the fall. The fruit of the oak is the acorn. Many birds and animals such as deer, pheasants, quail, squirrels, and chipmunks depend on acorns as an important part of their food source.
The branches of an oak tree provide shelter for many birds and animals and its hard, strong wood is used in making furniture and flooring.
O is for the Oak, our official state tree.
Look carefully among the leaves, and acorns you will see!
